An earthquake of 6.3 magnitude hit Christchurch, New Zealand's second largest city.
The region is subject to many shocks, which is unlikely to cause casualties, while the modern building techniques used in New Zealand.
There is even a special map constantly updated to display all the earthquakes in sequence from September 4, 2010 (When the area was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 7.1) to date:

The earthquake today was particularly (and tragically) devastating as the hypocenter was detected in only 4 kilometers depth.
