Porto Venere with the islands of Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto and Cinque Terre has been included in UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 . The village lies at the southern end of a peninsula, which, breaking away from the jagged coastline of the Ligurian Riviera di Levante, it forms the western shore of the Gulf of Spezia. At the end of this peninsula are three small islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; only Palmaria Island, which lies directly opposite the village of Porto Venere beyond a narrow stretch of sea, is a small inhabited. Among the places of interest and munumenti certainly the most famous is the Church of San Pietro, perched on the rock of the promontory that was built by the Genoese in 1256 and 1277. In the upper part of the country is the church of San Lorenzo which was built by the Genoese in 1098, following the Romanesque style, in a place where in ancient times there was probably a temple dedicated to Jupiter. The Doria Castle is an ancient fort situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the fishing village and is one of the most impressive military architecture of the Republic of Genoa in the Ligurian Levant. The rooms of the castle hosts major exhibitions and newly built amphitheater are prepared theater, ballet and concerts.
